Joint-stock stevedoring company Klaipedos Smelte, based in Klaipeda Seaport, handles and stores containers, heavy lift and oversized cargo, frozen meat and fish products, other conventional cargoes.
Klaipedos Smelte has gained the longest experience in handling frozen products in Klaipeda port: first shipments of fish were unloaded to the cold store in the end of 7th decade. Today the new generation Klaipedos Smelte cold store terminal, launched in October 2007, offers its services to clients involved in reefer business. Around 25.000 tons of reefer production (frozen meat, fish, sea food and etc.) can be stored in the terminal at the same time. The terminal is well suited both for accommodating of reefer vessels and stripping of reefer containers discharged at Klaipedos Smelte container terminal. The cold store terminal handles around 140.000 tons of frozen production annually. Project throughput capacity of the terminal – 350.000 tons per annum.
All operations in Klaipedos Smelte cold store terminal are managed by the warehouse management computer system that rationalizes the organization of terminal procedures. Implemented barcode labeling and identifying system allow the clients to track the real-time movement and storage location of their cargo. Installed mobile racking system provides the possibility to reach the cargo with special fork-lifts without additional sorting and to collect the shipments according to the clients’ requirements efficiently.
Terminal services:
- Unloading of frozen products from reefer vessels (1.000 – 10.000 t capacity) and stripping of reefer containers.
- Loading of frozen products to motor vehicles, reefer railcars and stationary reefer containers mounted on rail platforms.
- Storage of reefer products.
- Cargo sorting, weighting, replacing of pallets and other services.

- Storage area – 8000 m² (5 chambers, each of 1600m²).
- Storage capacity – up to 25.000 t.
- Temperature modes: from -28 C0 iki +5 C0.
- State Food and Veterinary Service Office located in the same port area.
- Direct access to Klaipedos Smelte container terminal (distance of just 1.000 meters), both located in the same customs area.
Technical equipment:
- Gantry cranes (6 t lifting capacity) – 4 units.
- Special fork-lifts for operations inside of chambers (1.6 t lifting capacity) – 5 units.
- Fork-lifts (1.3 t lifting capacity) – 8 units.
- Mobile racking system installed (STORAX racking systems Ltd., U.K.)
